Wilderness Camp FAQ

What will we be doing on the trip?

Plan on being involved with every area of camping including carrying everything 1 mile in and out, setting up camp, food prep, clean up, and collecting firewood. Besides the basic camping experience, we will also go hiking, rappelling, swimming in the lake, food foraging, and play slingshot paintball, along with a day trip to the Evan’s Plunge water park.

Exactly where are we going?

We will be camping in the wilderness near Silver City, SD, which is 45 minutes west of Rapid City, SD.

What are the drop-off and arrival times?

Please plan on arriving at camp Sunday evening so that we can leave first thing Monday morning. We will plan on returning to Glad Tidings on Sunday by mid afternoon and then we will do a bit of clean-up. For right now, plan on being done at about 5 or 6pm – and parents will be notified if this end time varies significantly.

Are all the meals provided? Do the campers need to bring extra money along?

There are a couple of additional costs involved totaling about $25:

  • Fast Food $ for Lunch on Monday (could bring sack lunch instead) and for Lunch on Sunday
  • Spending $ (if desired) for trip out, stop at Evan’s Plunge, and trip back
  • $14 for entrance to Evan’s Plunge

Will there be an opportunity to go fishing?

We will be camping next to a trout stream. So, if you would like, you can bring very light fishing tackle.

** If you are over 15 and desire to fishing, you must purchase your own South Dakota Non-resident fishing license ahead of time.

How many people are going on the trip?

2 or 3 Leaders and 12 campers.

Will we have access to a bathroom? Shower?

No, this is “primitive” camping. We make men’s & women’s latrines in private areas. And, we put swim suits on and bathe in the stream. We do take a couple day trips that potentially include stops with showers – for instance, we might end up at Evan’s plunge and be able to take a hot shower there.

What kind of suitcase/bag should we bring? What about one with wheels?

Bring what you like, just know that you won’t be able to wheel it in; you’ll need to carry it in. So, a duffle-bag or backpack would be recommended.

Will the group have phone service?

We take a first aid kit along. We take precautions in regards to a forest fire and/or flood. Our Guides/Leaders have 30+ years of experience on this trip and are prepared for emergency contingencies.

What are the emergency plans?

There is no phone reception in the immediate camping area, and it is about 20 minutes to the nearest service. With our activities and day trips, we will regularly be in areas with service.

What does my camper need to bring?

** What you bring, you will need to pack in and out of the campsite (approximately 1 mile)
** Do not bring anything that you are worried about getting damaged or lost.
